This Soap in a Week project is really exciting for us at ITV and one we’re delighted to be doing with the University of Central Lancashire. The facilities here are fantastic; the new set is amazing and it will be such a great educational tool to help students come out at the other end with practical industry knowledge.

A BOLD NEW VENTURE
I am very excited to be writing about this brand new course starting in September 2018. The course builds on so many strong and positive elements of our Faculty.
We have developed a great working relationship with ITV in nearby MediaCityUK. This led to us working with them – 100 students and 50 crew from Coronation Street and Emmerdale – to innovate new production processes for continuing drama production! This Soap in a Week project was a great success and led to the follow-up Musical in a Week which saw Musical Theatre students working with top industry names from music theatre to make a brand new musical, Extraordinary, for Children in Need. We had five live links on BBC1 in a single day! In 2016 the Faculty was rewarded for its innovative work by receiving the Times Higher Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts. And this month, our Professor of Contemporary Art Lubaina Himid MBE won the 2017 Turner Prize!
Our constant aspiration to innovate and create new opportunities for learning has led to this new course. This is our very first 2-year fast-track degree, and is aimed at students wishing to work in the creative industries producing continuing drama.
We are working with a local broadcaster to create, write, produce and broadcast a new continuing drama for real audiences, with a reach of over 600,000!
This practice-based degree - not only mimicking real-world experience but delivering it - will give students unique opportunities to develop skills and prove themselves. We are investing in building interior sets for a variety of soap opera environments. This facility will complement our new production zone, gallery and exterior street set to provide that true to life production environment.
If you want to work in TV, in drama, then I truly believe this course will give you the real world experiences to help you stand out in this competitive - but exciting - business.
Visit the course webpage to find out more about the course or apply now via UCAS.
And maybe this time next year you will be playing a key role in bringing a new continuing drama to life. The next step in your story!

I’m really excited to be involved with UCLan’s innovative fast track degree in Continuing Drama. To offer students such unique real world experience and the opportunity to actually produce a continuing drama alongside industry specialists is a fantastic offering. Having worked with UCLan on a number of projects, like Soap in a Week and Drama Bites, I know that this degree will offer students a new pathway into the industry and one which will support and nurture fresh talent.”
